Safety 1st Lift Lock and Swing Gate Review
I absolutely love this gate even though I've found 1 flaw with it. It's not the old one. I think it was called the lift & lock gate. I got this one because the old one my husband finally broke so I needed another one for the top of the stairs. All the other gates are expensive & since we have a baby and a toddler the old one wouldn't do. I went to Babies 'r Us & found this gate. It seemed perfect since our stairway is wider than most. I have to admit it was a pain to put together because I put all the screws in to hold the gate together only to find that they have to be really loose to adjust it to the right length. No problem just tighten them enough where the buttons don't fall off. It's not that hard to install the hinges if you're using the hardware mount. You don't need the templates if you have 2 people. Just lengthen the gate, slide it in the hinges then once it's against the wall have 1 person slide the gate out then the other drill them into place. Plus this gate will slide out the hinges if you want to move it somewhere else or take it with you to use it as a pressure mount. And that's where it's not a "GREAT" but still a well worth it.
You do have to loosen the screws to adjust the gate then tighten the screws again to have the gate fit other areas. With the lift & lock gate once it was unlocked you could adjust it to whatever fit you needed. You didn't have to worry about screwing anything in. But sometimes with the other gate it was a hassle to slide it closed when the little hinges would come out of their holes which is why my husband finally broke out out of frustration when trying to adjust it. It's probably why they didn't make this one the same way. Plus, it allows us to simply unlock the gate & swing it out of the way so both our toddler & ourselves can do it one-handed to get up or down the stairs without having to unlock it and readjust it using the pressure mounted system. That REQUIRED both hands. All in all I think this gate is definitely worth the money with it's versatility and ease of use. So much so that we bought 2, 1 for the top & bottom of our stairs.
Oh, & it does have Smart Technology which is great. But if you have uneven walls like mine it won't show green; however, the gate is still secure. My husband yanks on it to make sure it's closed.

Okay, so maybe I didn't read all the fine print carefully enough. But the gate has "swing" in the title, and in the description it also says "pressure-mounted." I thought I was getting a gate that would swing while pressure-mounted to the wall. When I received it, I realized it only swings if you use hardware to drill holes in the wall. If you pressure-mount the gate, it works just like any other cheap, plastic gate that you have to step over each time (creating another hazard for your baby; what if you trip over it while carrying him/her?) Also, when I did try to pressure-mount it the green "locking" mechanism didn't work properly. I ended up returning it!

This seemed like a perfect solution to a non intrusive, no hardware gate for my son. Let it be known I live in an old house and the walls are not perfectly even and the base molding is 4" high. I installed this and the "green/red" guides would go green but not secure the upper portion of the gate. (Above the molding)I tried several times in different areas of the hall, all within 7 inches back and forth. No good. It would not provide the right pressure no matter what. The gate was easily moved back and forth. In my opinion, as a pressure mounted gate this thing is useless!!!!! Don't even bother. I ordered a self closing gate that did not require screws and it is fantastic!!! Yeah it was a bit more but well worth it....all metal too, do yourself a favor stay away from this one. Note: I mentioned the uneven walls because it may be the problem but lets face it are any of are walls perfectly even??? The guide should have stayed red.
Love this gate! - new momma - CA
I was really hesitant to drill into our wall and install this semi-permanently but am SO glad we did. Even my husband who was against this loves the gate. It allows us to block off part of our house very easily. It blocks our bedrooms from the living area. It was pretty easy to install (took one star off because getting the width right was a little tricky), took my husband maybe 10 minutes or so. Many of our friends have other baby gates and they all love how easy this one it to use. I like the look (on ours the left portion isn't as dark grey which I like) and how it really disappears from sight. Overall, a very functional product

I initially purchased this product so that I would have a swing gate to let my dog into another area. When I realized it could be spring-loaded I installed it that way and have been satisfied because I didn't have to drill holes. The gate is low enough for an adult to step over, if need be, but is easily removed to allow pets through and can be quickly reinstalled in the same area without readjusting (as with my previous gate). It does what I need it to do without damage to my walls, and at a good price.
