Hazards in Baby's Nursery - 4 Things to Keep Out of Your Baby's Nursery

You've created a beautiful space in the nursery for your baby, gathered all the essentials and cleaned from ceiling to floor. Your baby's nursery is safe right? Not necessarily. Here are 4 products that should be avoided because they create a hazard in the nursery. You'll be surprised to learn what they are.

Plastic Bottles

These bottles are often made with #7 plastic which contains a hormone disruptor known as BPA or Bisphenol A. BPA interferes with cell division of eggs in female mice and results in eggs having abnormal numbers of chromosomes. This in turn results in mental retardation and many other serious neurological problems. Even though skeptics say that there is no evidence that it causes these problems in humans, mice and humans are very much alike in terms of cell division of eggs. BPA can be released from the bottle to your baby once it has been cleaned with strong detergent or heated. Glass or BPA-free bottles and sippy cups are a safer alternative.

Synthetic Furniture

Furniture made with pressed wood, particle board, and plastics that are coated with finishes made with other than organic products pose a serious threat because babies' hands and mouths are in constant contact. Many are coated with a fire retardant, and in addition off gas chemicals into the air more over time as the seals at the joints weaken. Buy your baby's furniture from companies whose products are made using natural and non-toxic components.

Oil or Latex Paint

Both these paint types contain volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) which off-gas harmful petrochemicals (petroleum based products) for months after the paint in the nursery is dry. Exposure to VOCs can cause respiratory problems, eye irritation, nausea, dizziness, and even cancer. And the worse part is your baby is not able to communicate the problem to you. Choose No-Voc paint for a healthier environment in the nursery.

Carpet

When new carpet is often coated with chemicals that make it stain proof and fire retardant-nothing you want your baby to crawl around on. And the adhesives that are used are often laden with chemicals that off-gas into the room for months. If the carpet is old, regardless of how well it is cleaned, it is a haven for mold, and the padding under it is inaccessible to cleaning. Opt for formaldehyde-free wood floors and area rugs that can be washed.

Sometimes you have little or no control over carpet, paint and furniture choices. Using an air purifier that is specifically designed to remove volatile organic chemicals and other pollutants from the air in your baby's nursery is an excellent solution.
