Film composition

A film composition I did for a friend who made a short video named "the escape". The brief is as follows: 00:00 - From a distance, we see a shot of the prison camp with its observation towers, followed by images of the activities going on inside. Some prisoners are exercising, some are playing card games, others are just relaxing. The ever present guards constantly observe. There is an air of resignation amongst the prisoners - they are in for a long stay. 00:25 - But the next shot reveals that the prisoners are constructing a tunnel. We see them 'at the pit face', digging the tunnel using homemade tools. They have to transport the earth back down the tunnel and store it anywhere they can until it can be dispersed in the camp gardening allotments. 00:55 - Inside the huts, preparations are being made - civilian clothing and disguises are being produced, false documents are being forged, and a few provisions for the journey have been stashed away. As night falls, all is quiet in the camp. 01:20 - The escape attempt begins. While lookouts keep watch, the escapers gather their equipment and make their way to the far end of the tunnel. On the lookout's signal, they quickly break out. The tunnel has brought them clear of the camp fences, and they start to run the remaining few yards into the nearby forest. 01:55 - Suddenly the alarm is raised, and every available floodlight is switched on. The searchlights converge to illuminate the area where the tunnel emerges. Guards pour ...

Nifty Nappy Changing

My little grandson has taken to doing acrobatics whilst having his nappy changed. For quite a while he's preferred to stand whilst his mum attends to the business end. A bit tricky at first but she found that if she was fairly speedy and he was standing alongside his cot where she'd strategically placed a few toys a result could easily be achieved.

Recently however the whole thing has become a little more exciting. Now he doesn't just roll over and get to his feet the second she lays him on the changing mat, he has taken to randomly sitting down in the middle of the process. Then standing up, then sitting down again. Without being too graphic, shall I just say it's been rather messy. Not helped by his system having to get used to formula after having only had breast milk for 11 months.

It's one of those 'we'll laugh about this some day' scenarios that isn't actually very funny at all when you're experiencing it.

We turned to the fab Mumsnet.com for help (or nunsmet as my mobile phone predictive text would have it). As I expected, there were lots of ideas. Suggestions included giving them normally refused treats to occupy them. Perhaps a small packet of tissues or the wipes packet. But we figured we'd soon run out of such delights and once you've destroyed a packet of tissues two or three times there's no pleasure in it any more. Others suggested changing him on a raised platform. A fear of falling would apparently keep him in place. There are obvious health and safety issues here, not least young sir's tendency to throw himself off beds, down stairs etc.

My daughter fixed on a system which seems to work. It involves her sitting on the floor with him lying horizontally between his legs. His head is beyond her left knee, feet in the middle pointing towards her right knee. This way she can gently hold him in place with her left knee across his chest and do the whole nappy thing without him really noticing.

I've not actually witnessed this yet and on Friday when he was spending the day with me, I just bunged him a pack of wipes. He had a blast!

Pack n Play Little Hoot Review

This is my third baby and third P&P as well. Hands down my favorite. Simple, sturdy, attractive, easy to use. The colors are neutral; owls are cute. The bassinet is sturdy and comfortable. I like the diaper holder; very convenient.

Not using the mobile; I would have liked for it to go over the changing table but it has to go on the other end. This makes it a bit awkward to get the baby in between the changing table on one end and the mobile on the other. But no big deal; I don't mind not having a mobile.

We looked at a similar model with the newborn napper; it didn't look very sturdy and not much advantage over just the bassinet so we didn't get that one.

Also recommend:
1. P&P sheets in cream, khaki, or ducks egg blue. Grey or natural linen might also look nice if you can find them. I'm using the American Baby Company Organic Cotton Velour Pack N Play Sheet; it looks great. White, baby blue, or cotton candy pink will not look as nice with the colors of the P&P. If you must have pink I would use either a pale peach or a bold, bright magenta.

2. Something soft for the changing table. The waterproof material is handy to clean, but cold to the touch. I like the Kushies Deluxe Change Pad, Cream Polka Dots; it is the perfect size to fit this changing table, soft, and works well with the color scheme. I also have the Snoozy Organic Flannel Cotton Waterproof Multi Use Pad which is also a good fit and soft but not quite as attractive.

I purchased the Eddie Bauer sheet after reading discouraging reviews about the sheets made specifically for the Graco Pack n Play. I am thrilled with the fit and quality of this quilted sheet. It is nice and soft, perfect for a newborn, and washes nicely. I have washed it in both cold and warm water and dried it on gentle and have not had any shrinkage. The fit is perfect for the Graco Pack n Play and it gives just a little extra padding for baby. The sheet is not waterproof so I put the American Baby Company Waterproof Large Sheeting Pad under it. I would buy another one in a second!

Fits CLASSIC POOH Graco wonderfully - sothlice - NH
I bought this after some hesitancy with regard to it fitting whatever brand portable crib I might own. For the Let's Fly a Kite pack n play, it fits PERFECTLY. I don't even have to use an extra pad, as this sheet does double duty. I don't imagine I'd use it in warmer weather, but for winter, it's awesome. No pilling problems so far; I dry it on medium-low.

Creating Dog Friendly Yards

People who love gardening are often at a loss as to how to maintain pet friendly yards. Fortunately, with a little thought and compromise, it is not a difficult task to achieve. Pets and their owners can both enjoy their pet friendly yards with no major mishap to the pets or the gardens.

One of the first things that are needed in pet friendly yards is a high and sturdy fence all around. This will not only prevent pets from running out, it will deter stray dogs from coming in. The fence should be equipped with wire meshing at the edges to block off any gaps. Do not grow plants near the fence, as dogs like to establish their territorial rights. This may lead to unsightly dog paths being created here. Dogs need places to run around, so pet friendly yards should have stone paved areas or paths.

Take care not to leave any area with loose mud in the garden- it is an invitation to start digging! It may be a good idea to fence off an area that is exclusively for the dog to romp around. A dog house is also essential to protect the pets from excessive heat or wind. It should not be too close to the outer fence as dogs can climb on the house and jump out. The dogs should also have a bath room area that they are trained to use, to prevent the lawn from being messed up. Make sure there is water available for them to drink.

What to Grow In Pet Friendly Yards

Grass and plans cannot tolerate the nitrates in dog urine, so train them to keep off the grass. Some varieties of grass are sturdier than others, such as Bermuda grass and can with stand treading. Clover is perhaps the ideal choice, as it does not stain the way grass does after being subjected to dog urine. Delicate plants can be protected with wooden picket fences or wire cages around them. This prevents dog urine from reaching their trunks and roots, and damaging them. While there are numerous plants to choose from to grow in gardens, pet friendly yards should not have poisonous plants. Check out lists of plants that are suitable to have around with pets before planning the garden.

Pet friendly yards should have secure places for storing herbicides and other chemicals. Pets should be allowed to play only after 24 hours of fertilizing a yard. It is also a good idea to have pet toys and chews to keep them entertained while they are out.

This is one of the most common questions I get from clients that are undecided on whether or not to remove their pool. I am by no means a real estate professional but I have read several articles on this topic and have seen the effects that removing a pool can have on selling a property first hand. Here is my attempt to answer that question...

Most people would like to have a definitive answer regarding this question. Unfortunately, like many other factors in real estate, it depends. Below are some of the issues I have seen that affected property value in relation to swimming pools.

This is a list of factors that may have a flat or negative effect on your home's value.

1. If the pool takes up 30% or more of the backyard.
2. If the pool is over 30 years old and is in need of repair
3. If the pool does not have a safety gate around it.
4. If the pool is made from a vinyl liner.
5. If the geographic area the pool is in has less than 3 months of "swimming weather"
6. If the pool is the only one in the neighborhood.
7. If your area is currently experiencing a drought

This is a list of factors that may have a positive effect on your homes value.

1. The pool is less than 15 years old.
2. The pool takes up less than 10% of your backyard.
3. Most of your neighbors have pools.
4. The pool equipment is relatively new and energy efficient.
5. The geographic area the pool is in has more than 6 months of "swimming weather"
6. The pool is completely enclosed by a safety gate.
7. If your home is considered a "luxury home"

Supply and Demand:
The current economic downturn has reduced the pool of buyers substatially over the past couple years. According to real estate professionals the best way to get offers on your home is to appeal to as many possible buyers as possible. In general most families that do not want a swimming pool are less likely to look at a home that has one due to the cost of removal. Whereas, a family that does want a swimming pool will likely look at homes that have existing swimming pools or enough space to install one. Another factor to keep in mind is that if you have a swimming pool and are selling your house, it may benefit you to sell during the summer time when swimming pools are the most attractive to buyers.

Repair or Removal:

If your pool is in need of repair and you are selling your house these are some suggestions that may be helpful.

1. Talk to your real estate agent and ask their professional opinion on the effect of having a swimming pool on your property.
2. Review the above list of positives and negatives and see which you fall into.
3. Get 3 estimates on repairing your pool.
4. Get 3 estimates on removing your pool.
5. Compare the middle 2 estimates of removing compared to repairing and figure the difference.

Example where repair would be the appropriate action:

Base home value: $500,000 Value added for pool: 3%= $15,000
Cost of Removal: $10,000
Cost of Repair: $12,000
If Repaired the total value would be $503,000 (500,000+15,000-12,000)
If Removed the total value would be $490,000 (500,000-10,000)

Example where removal would be the appropriate action.

Base home value: $500,000 Value added for pool: -2%= (-$10,000)
Cost of Removal: $9,000
Cost of Repair: $7,000
If repaired the total value would be $483,000 (500,000-10,000-7,000)
If removed the total value would be $491,000 (500,000-9,000)

Other factors such as landscaping and time factors such as maintenance and mortgage should also be taken into account.

Personal Experience
A large portion of pools that I have removed are related to real estate transactions. Here are a couple of examples that I have experienced after removing swimming pools.

1. Home in Moraga was on the market for 6 months, prospective buyers generally felt the same about the pool, that it was poorly placed and undesireable. I removed the pool and the house was in escrow within 2 weeks.

2. A home in Walnut Creek where the owners needed to move for work purposes was unable to sell their house because of the decreased value due to the real estate slump. In order to rent the home the insurance company wanted to increase the premium drastically and install a gate that was going to cost $3,500. In addition, several renters expressed hesitation due to the pool and the homeowners would be responsible for maintenance and repair. They decided the best course of action was to remove the pool. The homeowners had far more interest from potential renters once the pool was removed. The majority of the applicants had children and wanted to be in the Walnut Creek school district but didn't want the hazards or liability of a pool.

3. An elderly couple in Danville had lived for 40 years in their home. They enjoyed their swimming pool for years but the cost had gotten so high for maintenance that they were considering selling their house and buying one without a pool. The equipment was over 30 years old and very inefficient and they had to pay a maintenance company $120/month to clean it. The total cost monthly was $250. They had never even considered removing the pool until their real estate agent introduced me to them. I removed their pool and they were able to stay in the home that they loved so much.

The baby gate is used to keep my baby foster kittens in their room! Every time i opened the door to visit, feed, or scoop litterbox, they ran out like gang busters! I had to chase them all over the house to get them back! LOL Kind of a pain in the morning before work!! So i put this gate in front of the door and it still allowed me to open the door. This one is great cause the little buggers cant climb up it like the other gate i had! I could just barely step over it, which made it almost high enough to keep them from jumping over it! Almost that is!! lol when they got much bigger and had a good running start, well, you get the idea! But i could usually catch him or her before they made it over!! Very lightweight.

I agree with every other positive review...my husband spent a lot of time trying to jerry-rig a different baby gate (one with holes in it) with clear plastic and zip ties, which worked, but then we moved a few months later (we're military) and the baby gate he spent so much time on didn't fit in our new place...save yourself some time and just get this one...one of my ferrets can usually figure out how to get around anything (ANYTHING!...sigh), but this gate is impervious to his ingenuity :)

These gates are perfect for ferrets: tall enough to prevent hopping over, smooth on one side so they cannot climb, and fit snugly against the wall. My two ferrets do not even try to get past the gates. My apartment has crooked walls and the gate actually holds in place even though the walls diverge a couple of inches from the floor to the top of the gate. I was very impressed. They are not heavy duty so they would be better for small animals.

I bought this gate thinking it would be great for my 5 month old Yorkie, it was fine for two days then she learned how to jump and attach her front paws to the top and climb over. I had to raise it by two feet and put a bunch of stuff to block off the gaping hole at the bottom. While that works I need to get another gate for the bottom because it is tiresome moving cases of soda and her travel crate back and forth. I'm still amazed that she can get over it so easily. It did pose a problem with my skirting as I have to install over it. I plan to add some wood at the bottom to close up the 3 inch space. You have to be handy with wood and screws if you have thick skirting.



Difficult to use and doesn't work with baseboards - Penny -
After reading the positive reviews here, I decided to buy this gate. What a mistake! First, adjusting the width of the gate was a pain. The sliding mechanism is just not smooth. Second, opening the gate is difficult. I'm an average strength woman and I had to use two hands to unhook the metal latch. Third, I have fairly shallow baseboards and this gate did not work with them. The rubber cushions on the ends are not adjustable so if the gate is used with baseboards, the cushions are not long enough to make contact with the walls.

A Surprise Baby Shower Can Be the Perfect Way to Celebrate

Throwing a surprise shower doesn't have to be difficult. In fact, it can be fun for all involved. All it takes is a little patience, a few basic steps, and the cooperation of friends and family.

The Cambridge police officer at the center of the controversy over the arrest of a black Harvard professor says he will not apologize for the incident, the Boston media report. Henry Louis Gates Jr., was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct at his home near Harvard last week after a neighbor called in a report of a possible break-in. Gates, who was returning from a trip abroad, and his driver, had been trying to force open a front door. The professor eventually got inside, by using a back door, when police arrived. The police report indicates that a heated exchange occurred although Gates showed his Harvard ID police allege that Gates initially refused to identify himself. In any case, Gates was handcuffed and arrested, although charges were later dropped. Gates, 58, who charges that the arrest was racially motivated, has demanded that the police officer, Sgt. James Crowley, apologize for the incident. USA TODAY reports that the incident has ignited a long-simmering national debate over racial profiling. Crowley, in an exclusive interview with the Boston Herald, says he harbors no ill feelings toward the professor but will not apologize. I just have nothing to apologize for, he tells the Herald. It will never happen. The Boston Globe reports that Crowley says Gates' arrest was not racially motivated. "I am not a racist," The Globe quotes the officer as saying. Piece of Junk and a Safety Hazard - H. Chung - NYC
The Sleepy Safari bassinet/playpen is flimsy and unsafe. The shade (used to prevent light from hitting the baby's face) came crashing down into the bassinet because the clips that are suppose to fasten the shade to the bassinet are junky plastic pieces. Had my baby been in the bassinet, the shade would have landed on his head and neck and choked him. And the same junky plastic clips are used to fasten the diaper tray to the playpen.... so the diaper tray came crashing down onto the floor while we were sleeping, which frightened us. Plus, it is impossible for the baby to fall asleep on the bassinet because it jiggles. This bassinet/playpen was expensive and I wish I had never bought it. I have had it for 4 months now and have never used it. It is an accident waiting to happen.

I was actually relieved when I found a tear in the bassinet blanket, as it solidified my decision to return this frustrating product. I've put together a wide variety of baby items over the last month, but nothing came close to the frustration of this thing. Not to mention the useless directions, which feature small, black and white photographs of an older version of the product. The locks on the playard are hidden behind cloth, so you just have to keep lifting the bars until they somehow magically lock. Well played, Sleepy Safari, you've relieved us of the burden of seeing how things work. I'm so excited about putting a newborn into this thing. Seriously, I wouldn't put a 12 year-old cat with glaucoma in this thing, much less a newborn baby. And the directions say that if you have trouble finding the locking mechanism, just keep trying. Um, if you have to mention in the directions that finding the locking mechanism is challenging, that should be the first clue that you didn't make a very good locking mechanism. I'll be returning this first thing tomorrow, and choosing something from a reputable brand like Greco.

Trick Offensive Football Plays

Throughout a football game the majority of offensive plays that will be run will be fairly basic. However, once in a great while an offense will decide to pull a trick play. These trick plays have a very high risk or reward - they can either gain major yardage for the offense or they can result in a turnover for the defense. Some trick plays are run more often than others and some have a higher risk or reward than others. It's no surprise that the offensive football plays that have the highest risk or reward are the plays that are run least often.

One play that is considered a trick play but is fairly common is the reverse. This is a running play that involves the running back taking either a pitch or a handoff and then running what appears to be a sweep. However, another player, usually a wide receiver, runs from the opposite side behind the running back and takes a pitch or a handoff from the running back and then runs the ball around the opposite end.

The reverse works best when the defense is over-pursuing to the ball. The offense hopes that they entire defense will be going the way the running back is going while the actual ball carrier is running around the opposite end.

A great offensive trick play that involves passing the ball is the hook and ladder. For this offensive football play, two receivers need to line-up on the same side of the field. Usually the play is run on the outside of the field near the sideline but recently running it in the middle of the field has become more popular.

What happens for this play is one receiver fakes like he's running straight down the field. That receiver suddenly stops and hooks back toward the quarterback. The quarterback throws the ball to that wide receiver. Then another offensive player runs down the same side. The receiver who hooked and caught the ball then laterals or pitches the ball to the other receiver.

The hope here is that the defense goes to tackle the first receiver while the player who gets the pitch takes off down the field with the ball. This type of offensive football play is popular at the end of the half or at the end of the game.

Another great trick play involves the quarterback catching the ball. For this play, the quarterback will take the snap and throw the ball backward to a receiver at one side of the field. The receiver will take a couple steps back and then catch the ball. The quarterback will then run around the opposite side of the formation and sprint down the field. The receiver with the ball will turn into a quarterback and try to throw the ball to the quarterback who has suddenly become the receiver.

The hope on this trick offensive football play is that the defense won't notice the quarterback going out and they won't cover him. In fact, many defensive players may think the play is simply a wide receiver screen. Of course this play works best when the wide receiver screen has already been run with success.

Most trick offensive football plays are designed to take advantage of a defense that is being too aggressive and over-pursuing to the ball. Though trick plays can have great results, they also have a fairly high probability of being disastrous. That's why an offense won't choose to run a trick play very often.
