Pressure Mounted Gates - They May Just Help to Save Your Sanity

How can pressure mounted gates help to keep you from going crazy all day long? If you have a child that is between 1 and 4 years old, using a gate to keep them confined to one area of the house can make a really big difference in the amount of stress you may have to go through everyday and believe me I know what I am talking about.

Whether you have one child, six children (which is how many I have) or 10 children, at some point they will begin to start to move and once they do, it's look out world here I come. They will be in one spot one second and somewhere else the second you simply blink your eyes. Of my six children, I have three that happened to be only 14 and 20 months apart. These happened to be my youngest three and while I did have at least one pressure mounted gate the fact is that I really should have had three of them simply because I had stairs going up, stairs going down, and the entrance to my kitchen, which I should have had pressure mounted gates placed at all three of these locations.

Still, being a young mother and nearly out of my mind most of the time, it never occurred to me to go out and invest in one or two more just for the sake of my own sanity but even more importantly for the safety of my young children. My son was constantly able to get into things that he should not have and it only made things that much harder for me.

I can't say how many times I would go to do laundry downstairs and come back up to a complete disaster.... I was using powdered formula at the time whenever they needed extra feedings or just when I was unable to nurse them. Not being cheap to buy, it was quite and inconvenience when I would find the powder covering my kitchen counters and floor because he just thought it was really cool to throw it all over the place. I did later figure out that I could use the cabinet latches and that also helped.

Anyway, I am here to tell you that it is much easier to keep your babies confined to one safe area of your house whether you are busy doing other chores or you are in the same room with them. Their safety and your sanity could well depend on this on simple thing, put up a pressure mounted gate.

So my point is that for the sake of your sanity and the safety of your beautiful little baby or babies, figure out how many pressure mounted gates you really need and make the investment in your self and your child. You really will be glad you did.

I do want to be perfectly clear that while a pressure mounted gate can be used at the top of a stairway, I never would recommend that as I believe it it not safe for the reason that they can become loose and become a danger to your precious child causing them to take a tumble along with the gate going down the stairs. Consider a permanently mounted gate for the top of your stairs while your babies are young and until you teach them to go down the stairs safely.

The baby gate is used to keep my baby foster kittens in their room! Every time i opened the door to visit, feed, or scoop litterbox, they ran out like gang busters! I had to chase them all over the house to get them back! LOL Kind of a pain in the morning before work!! So i put this gate in front of the door and it still allowed me to open the door. This one is great cause the little buggers cant climb up it like the other gate i had! I could just barely step over it, which made it almost high enough to keep them from jumping over it! Almost that is!! lol when they got much bigger and had a good running start, well, you get the idea! But i could usually catch him or her before they made it over!! Very lightweight.

I agree with every other positive review...my husband spent a lot of time trying to jerry-rig a different baby gate (one with holes in it) with clear plastic and zip ties, which worked, but then we moved a few months later (we're military) and the baby gate he spent so much time on didn't fit in our new place...save yourself some time and just get this one...one of my ferrets can usually figure out how to get around anything (ANYTHING!...sigh), but this gate is impervious to his ingenuity :)

These gates are perfect for ferrets: tall enough to prevent hopping over, smooth on one side so they cannot climb, and fit snugly against the wall. My two ferrets do not even try to get past the gates. My apartment has crooked walls and the gate actually holds in place even though the walls diverge a couple of inches from the floor to the top of the gate. I was very impressed. They are not heavy duty so they would be better for small animals.



Not great for jumpers and climbers - L. Downie - Trinidad, W.I.
I bought this gate thinking it would be great for my 5 month old Yorkie, it was fine for two days then she learned how to jump and attach her front paws to the top and climb over. I had to raise it by two feet and put a bunch of stuff to block off the gaping hole at the bottom. While that works I need to get another gate for the bottom because it is tiresome moving cases of soda and her travel crate back and forth. I'm still amazed that she can get over it so easily. It did pose a problem with my skirting as I have to install over it. I plan to add some wood at the bottom to close up the 3 inch space. You have to be handy with wood and screws if you have thick skirting.



Difficult to use and doesn't work with baseboards - Penny -
After reading the positive reviews here, I decided to buy this gate. What a mistake! First, adjusting the width of the gate was a pain. The sliding mechanism is just not smooth. Second, opening the gate is difficult. I'm an average strength woman and I had to use two hands to unhook the metal latch. Third, I have fairly shallow baseboards and this gate did not work with them. The rubber cushions on the ends are not adjustable so if the gate is used with baseboards, the cushions are not long enough to make contact with the walls.

This is a well constructed piece of hardware. The latch mechanism is sound and easy to use. A nice feature is the caster included so that the gate does not swing freely and put strain on the support. Also the fact that there is no rail along the bottom is a great safety feature ensuring much less danger of tripping.
My only criticism is that if this gate is to be installed in a location in which it will be opened and closed often, it really needs to be installed permanently with the hinge support screwed into a wall. Initially, I installed this gate in a heavy use passageway and over a period of several weeks, the gate required more and more frequent manual repositioning to straighten the gate and reconnect the velcro. The idea that pressure only installation might provide the option of repositioning in another opening appealed to me. But now that I have committed to the location and put a couple of anchors with screws into the wall for a more secure installation, I could not be happier with the gate.

Poor design - broke immediately - N Rossbach - PA
So disappointed with this gate. Top of the line, top dollar, but poor quality. I had the same issue as another reviewer. Literally the day after we installed it, the latch broke off completely (yes, the tiny plastic peg/plunger that locks the gate is brittle and flimsy). Additionally, it broke off into a nice choking hazard size. This gate is hazardous. I called the company and they would only offer a replacement at half the cost -- meaning I buy it. Buyer beware!

Difficult Latch System - Brycen's Mom - Upstate NY
I have two older versions of this gate and I much prefer the previous latch system. This new latch system is difficult to operate with one hand while holding a toddler. The latch requires a specific angle to operate with one hand and it is difficult to achieve with a wriggling toddler in your arms. When I am not carrying him I can open it first try. My husband has the same issue as does my mother when operating this new gate. The mounting system is excelent. It is identical to the older version and makes this gate incredibly flexible, we can put it just about anywhere in our house.

We purchased this gate originally for the bottom of our stairs. We really only considered pressure mounted gates as we didn't want to put holes in the walls of our brand new house! We also wanted a gate with a doorway, so we didn't have to constantly climb over it as we were heading up the stairs. After some research, we ended up deciding to give this one a try.

The gate took a little time to install properly, and it did require that we purchase an extension kit as well. You do need to install this gate with a lot of pressure, to the point where I thought it was starting to dent the drywall a bit. However, once the gate was installed there has been no issues with it whatsoever. Installed properly, the gate doesn't move at all, and the door is not able to be opened without using the latch. Our son has been able to latch the gate himself for quite a while, but never able to unlatch it.

Just a note that we actually had to installed the gate on the first stair (at the bottom of the stairs there is only a wall on one side) and it has not been any problems installed on the actual stair.

The gate has worked out so well we just got a second one to use in the upstairs hallway to keep our son away from the top of the stairs as well.

We had regular wooden baby gates to keep our two small dogs from going upstairs and they worked well enough but then I became pregnant and decided I wanted a walk-through gate so I didn't have to step over or remove the gate entirely every time I wanted to go upstairs. We choose this gate because it's wide enough to fit in our stairwell opening and because of the wide walk-though area. I Love this gate. We just leave the handle pulled up so we don't have to push the button every time we want to walk through it but I like that it's available for when the wee one will be old enough to start tugging on it. We also rent so pressure-mounted was important and after properly installing it (which I admit was a bit tricky) it hasn't budged at all in the past 6 months. It's very study! I just bought another one because I like it so much.

my favorite gate - C. Conner -
we've owned this gate for several years and love it. i recently tried out the dreambaby in another location and wasn't happy with it. the kidco is worth the extra money if you can afford it.

my kidco is much, much easier to install, doesn't require mounting cups, does not swing shut so it can be left open when my little guy is asleep. not good to leave it open when he is awake as he loves to swing it and bang it around.

the kidco latch has a button to be pushed while rasing the handle. you can then let go of the handle and lift and swing the gate. this seems to be easier for me and my 6 year old than the other brand, but also seems like it would be more difficult for the baby to figure out - if he could reach it.

we had this gate pressure mounted with extensions in a 64" opening in our previous house without any problem. its the only one we could find that would fit that space and we were very happy with it.
